25.IV,1947,
born in Klis on the outskirts of Split, in family house 1 km
from medieval fortress, 4 km from ancient Roman Salona, 8 km
from the Diocletian Palace, 2 km from ruins of church where
Croatian king Zvonimir was coronated in 1076. Also, 1 km from
cement factory in the area with six cement factories, quite
big shipyard, two important plastic factories, hydropower plant
(industrialization and socialism). Two layers: industrial one
and historic one, were in this area. Two sensibility: progressive
futuristic and conservative historic were with people around
me.
Education was four years in Klis, four in Solin and four in Split.
Two Olympic Games directed me toward architecture. Rome 1960, P.L.Nervi: Palazzo
and Palazzeto della Sport were so nicely presented in one TV report, and I
for the first time, got consciousness about architecture as an art, modern
and designed. Four years later, Tokyo, Kenzo Tange and again two sport halls
were topic of news report. I was completely animated. I visited an architectural
office in Split looking for more information. Very friendly architect in white
cloth and standing drawing board showed me project he was working on, supported
my interest in architecture and suggested me to draw as much as I can, advised
me to visit some construction sites - what I did. He was talking very respectfully,
contrary to public opinions, about just built modern building in the very historic
setting of Peristil, hearth of Diocletian Palace. I felt that modern can challenge
historic value. I made decision.
I graduated 14.VI,1970., at Architectural faculty in Zagreb, at Architectural
faculty in Belgrade made a specialization in residential architecture, and
then magister degree in 1982., and on domicile faculty in Zagreb achieved doctor
degree in 1990. My inner interest was housing, particularly low rise and family
house. I am member of the Zagreb Society of Architects and licensed architect
of Croatian Chamber of Architects.
Except my years I was abroad, all working life is connected with Architectural
Faculty in Zagreb 1.IX,1970. I started in Faculty Institute for architecture
(Zavod za arhitekturu) as a draftsman, collaborator and partner in design,
and latter on all mayor projects have been run through Zavod. After some years,
I complemented my work with education and teaching.
Working on the Architectural faculty
was an obligation and pleasure to teach students, to educate
and motivate young generation for good and responsible architecture,
to draw projects, possibly to build, and to exhibit them to the
public judgement and notice of professional critics, to do research
on architecture, to participate on different conferences and
to write about architecture. Working on faculty, with students,
with young and fresh generations, associating with faculty staff,
ambitious colleagues, meant to be in the middle, in the focus
of new architectural knowledge and strives.
As honorary assistant to prof.Fulla, spring semester 1975. I worked for the
first time with students, but my full assistantship at Architectural Faculty
started in autumn 1976. after return from Finland - in subjects of Housing.
Professors were Frankol, Filipović and Hasanagić, successors of prof.Galić,
Ljerka Biondić, Miro Pavlinić and myself, were assistants. First three years
I worked mostly with prof.Frankol, and after his sudden death 1979, following
twelve years I was with prof.Filipović. Both my professors, superior never
asked for obedience, neither ever showed some sign of their being boss - there
were absolutely collegian relationships with a lot of freedom for myself either
in my architectural preferences and work or in my assistant activity.
In 1991. years I got status of docent (assistant professor), and become formally
independent (it meant signing students index) and started with lecturing,
in 1995. I become associate professor, in 2001. full professor, in 2006. full
professor in tenure. In 1995-1997. I was elected vicedean to dean Prof.dr.sc.Ante
Marinović-Uzelac. For period of four academic years, 2007-2011., I was dean
of the Zagreb Architectural Faculty - my vicedeans were Alenka Delić, Miljenko
Haiman, Nenad Lipovac, Sanja Filep and Ivan Mlinar. In my work with students,
I had assistance of Zorana Protić in 2003/2004, Jasmina Ratković in 2004/2005
and Ivana Ergić from 2005 2012.
Year 1972-73, I spent the USA, in New York working in famoust offices of Marcel
Breuer and Paul Rudolph (worked directly with great architect and with Donald
Luckenbill who was my job captain). With "Greyhound" I was travelling
for two months all around. I was for two weeks in FLW legacy Taliesin West
upon invitation of Olgivannia Wright, where I met Wessley Peters, Bruce Pfeifer,
John Rattenbury. Three days in Paolo Soleri's Cosanti and Arcosanty were full
of memories. I visited office met and spoke with Louis Kahn (Henry Wilcots
showed me current projects). I got acquainted with Peter Blake (and Ann Wilson).
An academic year 1975-76 I spent in Helsinki at Finnish Museum of Architecture
under tutorial guide of Matti Vesikansa, met Raili & Reima Pietila, Erki
Kairamo, Kirmo Mikola, Jan Soderlund and I saw Alvar Aalto in person, couple
months before his death. Two months (IX,X,1980) I was in Urbino as a young
member of ILAUD teaching staff. Giancarlo Di Carlo, Peter Smithson, Charles
Moore, Herman Hertzberger, Don Lyndon, Lode Janssens, John Habraken, Antonio
Di Mambro, Jan&Jon, my colleague Mladen Bošnjak and our students Bojan
Baletić, Dražen Bukal, Minja Maretić, Marko Murtić, Živko Pensar, Marina Posarić,
Zdravko Sarapa - were there. Through years 1996-2001, Grigor Doytchinov, Borut
Juvanec, Todor Krstev, Zoltan Csorba, Michal Šarafim, Magdolna Holenyi and
myself were coordinating CEEPUS exchange program among architectural faculties
of Graz, Ljubljana, Sofia, Budapest, Bratislava and Zagreb. About thirty our
students and teachers were on exchange program. Workshop in Rovinj K&K
1998. under Hansjorg Tschom, was part of that program.
Many other travellings and professional visits, observations and talks helped
me to develop more my architectural sensibility. I talked and discussed with
many high honoured architectural names. I had a nice correspondence with Ms.Lidia
Invernizzi daughter of Angelo Invernizzi creator of famoust "Girasole".
Besides my Klis home that I am connected with all my life, I lived on and have
feeling for ten more addresses - Split: Ilićev prolaz 3 (three hundred meters
from Porta Aurea of Diocletian Palace) - Split: Maslešina 17 (my parents flat)
- Zagreb: Zamenhofova 8 - Zagreb: Biankinijeva 13 (my sister family flat)
Zagreb: Lenjinov trg/ Krešimirov trg 5 (my long lasting accommodation) - New
York: Bel-Air Tower, Yellowstone Blvd. Forest Hills - Helsinki: Antti Korpin
tie 4 (student dormitory) - Urbino: Collegio Dorms - Dugi rat (my parents in
law house) - and my final Zagreb: Dobri dol 50. All of them are specific and
unique, space and environment with own atmosphere, surroundings, sounds, warmth,
light and memory, alike dresses from different period of life.
My parents, Mijo-Mikela and Draga b. Gizdić had three kids, two older daughters
and me. In 1979. I married Silvija Mladin and we got Lena, Mija and Silve.
